Getting pictures for your site
The SurreyCommunity.info system doesn't have built-in photos or illustrations for you to use on your site. However, there are several ways of obtaining pictures to use on your site including:
- taking pictures using a digital camera
- scanning pictures using a scanner
- using an online photo library
Before you add a picture to your site, you may need adjust it by using photo editing software.
Using digital cameras or scanners
Most digital cameras and scanners can create very detailed pictures. However, these are often much bigger than you need for use on the web (they would take far too long to appear if you added them to a page). To get images that you can use on your site:
- See if your camera or scanner has a setting specifically for creating images for the web (this produces smaller, less detailed images).
- Use your camera or scanner as normal and then use photo editing software to resize the images.
There are many online photo libraries. Some charge you for using their pictures whilst others make pictures available for free. Even those photo libraries who supply pictures for free may have conditions attached (for example you may have to provide a link to the photo library site or include a credit for the original photographer on your site). You should check the terms and conditions of any photo libraries you use before adding their photo to your site.
You can find many online photo libraries by using a search engine. Four large libraries that supply free images are listed below (note that some may require you to register with them before you can download any photos and most of them include adverts for 'paid-for' images).
Many free photos on the web, including some from the sites above, are made available under a Creative Commons licence. This allows you to use the image for free with certain restrictions. You can find out more about how Creative Commons licences work and search for images on the Creative Commons website.
You may want to adjust pictures before adding them to your site. For example, you may need to cut them down to size so that they fit on your page. Or you might want to improve the image by adjusting the brightness or colours.
To do this you would normally use a photo editing program. Commonly used commercial programs include Adobe Photoshop Elements, Corel Paintshop Pro, iPhoto and Serif Photo Plus. There are also free programs available such as Picasa, Paint.NET and GIMP.
If you store your photos on sites like Google+, Flickr or Photobucket, these type of sites often include the ability to resize and make simple adjustments to your pictures.
An alternative is to use an online photo editor. These work through your browser so you don't need any extra programs. The sites listed below have online photo editors and are free to use but may require you to register with them before you can use some of the features.
