Your web browser temporarily stores copies of web pages in a cache on your computer. Occasionally this can cause problems when using your site (for example, recent changes might not display when editing pages).

These problems can sometimes be solved by clearing the cache. Basic instructions are below but you may also want to consult your browser's help menu for more detailed instructions.


Clearing your cache

The method for clearing the cache varies depending on the browser that you use. Some commonly used browsers are listed below.

Internet Explorer 7

  1. Open the Tools menu.
  2. Click Delete Browsing History.
  3. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files button and select Yes.
  4. Click Close and restart the browser.

Internet Explorer 6 and 8

  1. Open the Tools menu.
  2. Click Internet Options.
  3. Select the General tab.
  4. In the Browsing History section, click the Delete... button.
  5. In the confirmation dialogue make sure Temporary Internet Files is selected.
  6. Click the Delete button.
  7. Click Close and restart the browser.

Safari 3 and 4

  1. Open the Safari menu.
  2. Click Empty Cache.
  3. Click Empty when you are asked Are you sure? 

Firefox 2 for PCs

  1. Open the Tools menu.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Click the privacy icon.
  4. In the Private Data section, click Settings and make sure the box next to Cache is checked before selecting OK.
  5. Click the Clear Now link.
  6. Quit and restart the browser.

Firefox 2 for Macs and Firefox 3 for PCs

  1. Open the Tools menu.
  2. Click Clear Private Data.
  3. Make sure that Cache is selected.
  4. Click on Clear Private Data Now.
  5. Quit and restart the browser.

Firefox 3 for Macs

  1. Open the Tools menu.
  2. Click Clear Recent History.
  3. Make sure that Cache is selected in the details section.
  4. Click on Clear Now.
  5. Quit and restart the browser.


  1. Click the spanner in the upper-right corner of the browser window
  2. Select Options or Preferences. The options/preferences window will appear.
  3. Click the Under the Hood tab.
  4. Click Clear browsing data…
  5. Tick the box for Empty the cache. Untick any of the other boxes for data that you don't want to remove.
  6. Select Everything from the time period drop-down menu 
  7. Click Clear Browsing Data.
