Who we are and what we do
Our members enjoy playing together in a large recorder ensemble once a month. Anne Martin, our Musical Director since 1988, has now moved to Edinburgh, so during the 2017-18 season we shall be inviting a number of guest conductors, though Anne will be with us in October and November. The music played for the rest of the meetings will vary according to the individual conductor's choice, but will encompass very early up to modern, in a variety of styles.
We have a Playing Day in May each year - a whole day's playing with a guest conductor. All are welcome, and this event attracts many outside visitors. Some members also attend the SRP's annual festival, usually held in April each year and hosted by branches in different parts of the country. This is a weekend event which includes massed playing (150-200 recorders!), a wide choice of smaller playing sessions, recorder related shops and music sales and concerts. The Guildford Branch hosted a very successful 2012 event.
New members are very welcome, but should be at the post beginner stage in their playing. It is useful to be able to play both C (descant and tenor) and F (treble and bass) instruments and to bear in mind that the higher the instrument, the fewer players needed on that part. We encourage descant-only players to consider the tenor, which has the same fingering. Members play both wooden and plastic instruments and the good makes of plastic instrument fit in extremely well. Do ask about this if you are thinking of buying one.
