January 2018

David Burgess visits us this month.

David was born, educated and trained in Hampshire, being one of the early recipients of a County Music Exhibition. He read music and education at King Alfred's College, Winchester, and studied the organ with Christopher Gower and David Thorne at Portsmouth Cathedral. David holds Diplomas in piano performing, teaching and accompaniment and as an accompanist relishes opportunities to work with soloists.

David was formerly Head of Music at Cams Hill School, Fareham, where he still teaches one day a week. He now spends a very varied week as class music teacher and recorder specialist at three Junior and Infant Schools in the Bishops Waltham area and running a private teaching practice. David is Director of Music at All Saints Church, Botley, where he also serves as Assistant Church Warden, and is an active member of the Royal School of Church Music in the Portsmouth Area.

David is Conductor of Botley Choral Society, a thriving choir with over a hundred members, and has led them in many successful performances, most recently a sell-out Christmas Concert which included Bob Chilcott’s On Christmas Night. He has also very much enjoyed working with the other constituent choirs of the W&CMF, especially when bringing works that have not previously performed by the Festival. Rutter’s Mass of the Children, Malcolm Archer’s Requiem, the choral arrangement of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and the wonderful Stabat Mater by Karl Jenkins spring to mind, along with the Requiem by Bob Chilcott being performed tonight.

David is a member of the Society of Recorder Players and regularly conducts the Wessex Branch. He directed playing sessions in the National Festival at Guildford in 2012 and will guest conducting at the Guildford, Dorset and London Branches later this year. In January 2007 the Upham Recorder Orchestra (URO) was formed under David’s direction, allowing young players to continue their studies beyond primary school and giving adults an opportunity to rekindle their enjoyment of this sometimes maligned instrument. This is now a thriving group of over 30 players.

Music occupies many of David’s waking hours, but he will become restless if too many evenings pass by without a game of Canasta and a glass of wine!

Jackey Birch conducts the February meeting.

She is a member of Tutti Flutti, led by Philip Thorby, with whom she has lessons, and plays with Recorders Incorporated, conducted by Eileen Silcocks.

Harriet currently conducts and tutors eleven adult recorder ensembles in the Woking and Guildford areas, teaches in a primary school once a week and gives individual lessons.  She has tutored at Victoria House for the last three years.
