The Road Home (American Songs of Hope and Deliverance) explores some of the range of wonderful and distinctive voices in North American choral music over the last century, in particular celebrating the Spiritual, a choral genre that originated in America; Michael Tippett’s emotive settings of Five Spirituals from his oratorio A Child of our Time takes centre stage.
Our programme offers an opportunity to hear lesser-known works by Moses Hogan, a legendary figure in American 20th-century music. We hear in his heartfelt words and music the creations of a man of deep faith, made the more poignant by his early death in 2003.
No exploration of recent American choral music would be complete without sampling the rich textures of Eric Whitacre; the choir will sing Sleep and This Marriage. Also included are Canadian Eleanor Daley’s touching setting of words from the Song of Songs (Upon Your Heart), Randall Thompson’s Alleluia and the work that gives our concert its title, Stephen Paulus’s The Road Home.
We are pleased that pianist Gavin Roberts, who has delighted our audiences in the past, will return to play Gershwin’s Three Preludes as well as this inimitable song writer’s own arrangements of works such as The Man I love and I got rhythm.
This is perfect music to delight the senses on a summer evening!
