Died 3rd April 1915 - the first Tatsfield casualty of World War I
Sapper 65765 Martin was a member of 128th Field Company, Royal Engineers. He is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard – grave OC120. Born in Westerham in 1883, Sapper Martin was the husband of Beatrice Maud Martin (née Webster) of 4 Grove Villas, Tatsfield and was a builder and carpenter. The Westerham Herald of 17th April 1915 reported that a military funeral had been held for Arthur Martin who was aged 32 with two children. He had contracted scarlet fever shortly after enlistment at Guildford. His name also appears on the memorial plaque in St Mary’s Church.
Sapper Martin was one of a total of 29 men from Tatsfield or associated with the village who lost their lives in the First World War and whose names are listed here.
