Some facts about Surrey

Teacher and childrenOver four fifths of the county of Surrey is countryside, with two Areas of outstanding Natural Beauty - the Surrey Hills and part of the High Weald.

Surrey's population is just over 1.1 million, most of whom live in the major towns. About 85% of the population live in just 15% of the area.

There are proportionately fewer young people but more people aged 80 and over than in the UK as a whole.

Surrey's population is well educated with four in five people having some qualifications and more than one in four being educationed to at least degree level.

Ethnic monirities make up 5% of Surrey's population. The largest ethnic minority is of Indian decent, which makes up 1% of the population.

The population of Surrey is generally in good health with comparatively low mortality rates from major diseases. Life expectancy in the Strategic Health Authority region that includes Surrey is the second highest in the country.

The economy in Surrey is strong with Gross Domestic Product per head of population 27% higher than the UK average and incomes a third higher. More than a quarter of the working population are in banking, finance and insurance, compared with only 16% nationally. Surrey has one of the lowest levels of unemployment in the South East.

Surrey is bordered to the north and south by two of the world's largest international airports, both of which are expanding and which bring both major benefits to the county as well as offering significant challenges.

People riding bikes in Surrey The average house price in Surrey is over 70% higher than the national average. About a third of houses in Surrey are detached compared to about a fifth nationally. 22% of all Surrey homes are rented.

Car ownership is high in Surrey with around 1.5 cars per household. Only 14% of households in Surrey do not have access to a car, whilst 11% have access to two or more. More than 60% of people travel to work by car.

On average, each Surrey resident produces over half a tonne of waste per year, of which 80% currently goes to landfill.

Surrey remains one of the safest counties in the country with a total crime rate almost 25% lower than the rate of the South East and over 40% lower than the rate nationally.
