About Horsley U3A
Horsley U3A is a member of the University of the Third Age self-help movement which provides educational, creative and leisure opportunities for older (often retired) people in a friendly environment. There are over 600 branches already in the UK with around 200,000 members.
Local U3As are charities in their own right and are run entirely by volunteers. They are learning cooperatives which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The teachers learn and the learners teach !
Between them U3As offer the chance to study over 300 different subjects in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking.
Horsley U3A was set up in April 2008 and has grown rapidly since inception. The running of the U3A is handled by a volunteer Ad-Hoc Committee who hold committee meetings six times a year. Horsley U3A is affiliated to the Third Age Trust and has adopted a Constitution based on the Model Constitution prescribed by the Third Age Trust for its affiliate members. We operate as a charity and subject ourselves to charity law and will register as a charity with the Charity Commission when this becomes possible (the Charity Commission will not accept registrations at present from new charities with a turnover of less than £5,000 a year, due to computer problems).
Horsley U3A held its first Annual General Meeting on April 22nd 2009.
