Guildford Action is a registered charity that has been working within the Guildford Borough for over 28 Years. It was originally set up to support those who were unemployed in Guildford but over time has evolved its services to include support for all those who are disadvantaged and in need within the Guildford Borough. The projects that Guildford Action run are as follows; The Guildford Action Drop-in Centre which acts as a safe place (access to Doctor/Nurse, Laundry, Showers, subsidised food) for those who are or have been homeless and those who are disadvantaged or in need. The Guildford Action for Families (The GAF) runs a family support centre which runs sessions at The Stoughton Youth & Community Centre, which gives parents/ carers practical advice and support with a multitude of problems that they might face in the bringing up of children. There is also the Guildford Action Furniture Project which makes available affordable furniture to all those on benefits or on a low income.

Guildford is perceived as an affluent area, but many areas within the borough have been highlighted by statistics (Multiple Indices of Deprivation-ODPM) as some of the poorest in the country. This makes the divide between rich and poor even wider in our community.

A brief introduction to the above Guildford Action projects,

The Guildford Action Drop-in Centre- is based on Leapale Lane in the centre of Guildford. The Drop-in Centre is open Monday to Friday from 10am till 4pm. The Drop in centre gives people the opportunity to see a Doctor or Nurse, relax in a safe and supportive environment, receive subsidised food, do their washing and generally find out information and advice available to them in the area. The Drop-in Centre acts as a sign-posting advocate whose sole purpose is to help by giving a range of choices to those who are most disadvantaged within our community.
The Guildford Action for Families- Support Centre is based at Stoughton Youth & Community Centre (Turn left at the The Haven Foundation charity shop on the Worplesdon Road). The GAF runs a drop-in service on Friday between 10.00am and 2.30pm. This drop-in runs a crèche service during this period and gives parents / carers time to explore their options and talk to staff and others about issues that are affecting the family unit. There is a focussed sesional day on Tuesday dealing with specific issues and parenting (referral and invites). At all other times outreach work is undertaken to reach isolated or families in need in their own homes. Housing Support Service- This project runs out of the GAF office and has supported with a proactive stance a lot of people engaged with all the Guildford Action Projects. In many cases The Housing Support Service acts as an advocate between landlords and tenants before it becomes a matter of crisis.
The Guildford Action Furniture Project- was set up to make affordable furniture available to those who are on benefits or on a low income within the borough of Guildford. The furntiure project is open to all with those on benefits or in need being able to take up heavily discounted prices. Due to this interest we have had to restrict our collections and deliveries to a within a certain radius of Guildford, please don’t hesitate to call to enquire about collections and deliveries. To enable the charity to continue this valuable service we do ask for a donation to collect items of furntiure.
