Connection with Effingham

He was born in the parish and was residing on the Common in the period leading up to the War. He may have been one of the youngest of those named on the Effingham memorial to have enlisted: he was only 17 when he embarked for France in May 1915.

Genealogy

Frederick's grandfather Ashley Kemp was born at Little Bookham in 1852 [GRO Ref: Epsom 2a 12, 1852 (Q2)]. Ashley married Janet (née) Harvey - who was born in Paddington - in 1873 [GRO Ref: Kensington 1a 276, 1873 (Q4)]. They settled in Surrey, raising their children in various parishes. By 1881 they were living on Effingham Common, next door to a Ranger family:

The children Albert Ranger and Annie Kemp highlighted above would in due course marry.  Annie was still living with her parents on the Common in 1891:

In 1898 Annie, still unmarried, produced (by a man unknown) a son Frederick Orlando Kemp [GRO Ref: Dorking 2a 159, 1898 (Q1)]. By 1901 this boy was in the care of his grandfather Ashley, while Annie was living in Guildford and occupied as a servant:

At this time Albert Ranger was still living with his parents on the Common and occupied as a railway platelayer. In 1905 he and Annie married [GRO Ref: Dorking 2a 231, 1905 (Q1)]. Here they are in 1911, together with Annie's widowed father Ashley:

Since Frederick is entered above with the Kemp surname, uniquely among the children, it seems safe to infer that Albert had not been Frederick's father. Whoever that was, he may have been the source of Frederick's second forename Orlando.

Frederick enlisted at Guildford with the King's Royal Rifle Corps and was killed in action in France on May 3rd 1917.
