Programme
Dorking Local History Group meets at the Friends' Meeting House, Butter Hill, South Street, Dorking usually on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm.
Meetings are free to members and guests are very welcome on payment of £1 on the door. Tea and coffee are served afterwards when there is a chance for members to meet the speakers and to socialise. The Group's publications are generally on sale at these meetings, as well as publications of the speaker.

The Exploring Surrey's Past Project
by Giles Carey of Surrey History Centre
Giles Carey has been involved in the development of the project, (run by Surrey HIstory Centre in Woking), to put Surrey's history onto the web since its inception. He will be explaining the aims of the project and encouraging individuals to use the material and get involved in contributing to this great resource.

A brief history of the Holmwoods

Kathy will talk on the history of Holmwood from the Stone Age to the First World War based upon her five years of research.
February 3rd
The Dorking Emigration Scheme 1831-2
by Judy Hill from the University of Surrey
Following her talk last year on agriculturall unrest and poverty in the Dorking area Judy will be following on to tell how the Dorking Overseers struggled and failed to get surplus labourers into work, instead establishing an emigration scheme to send labourers and their families who could not be supported locally to Canada in the early 1830s.
