ORIGINS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE

The changing concept of the life of mankind was to see it consisted of four phases:

1, dependant childhood and education

2.paid employment and producing a family

3.the end of employment and raising a family

4. a return to  dependancy .

Phase 3 became known as the third age . Alongside this new  concept it was apparent that having reached that phase the expectation of life was increasing as well as a better quality of life. What then should those in this third age do.? A Professor in Toulouse realised education was still possible for third agers and approached Toulouse University to form an organisation, supported by the University ,to  continue education. Thus was born theUniversity of the third age.

These third age universities spread in Europe, eventually the idea reaching the U.K.

In the U.K. a decision was made to not link with existing Universities but be self-reliant.

The real difference of the French University of  the third age model and the English model,   having no dependancy on the universities in the U.K., English U3As have no entrance exams,do not set exams and give no awards. U.K. U3As are thus predominantly do-it-yourself , mini co-operatives in which members are one for all/all for one. There are no colleges,no professors,no tutors,no chambers,no campuses, only members. Our senior citizens, pensioners, golden oldies fit the third age  concept of life's phases.
